Meet Our Designer
At Sugar Flower Cake Shop, every cake is made from scratch.
We feel strongly that a wedding or other custom NYC cake cannot come from tasteless fondant, or a pre-made mix. After all, baker Amy DeGiulio founded this cake shop on the principle that fresh, local, and seasonal ingredients make the best tasting, most beautiful wedding cakes in NYC. Many of our ingredientsare from the lush, verdant Hudson Valley.
DeGiulio herself knows how to drive a tractor—albeit in high heels.
Before moving to NYC, the petite blond lived upstate, where she cultivated a giant garden containing everything from acorn squash to raspberry bushes to orchard fruit.
"I was surrounded by nature. I got my milk from the dairy, and my greens and fruit from my own soil. Everything was beyond fresh," she says. While admiring the bounty of the land, DeGiulio made friends with a few farmers and local chefs—many of whom are her suppliers today.
And she discovered her talent for crafting achingly beautiful sugar flowers. Made from sugar, her poppies crinkle. Her roses incorporate countless layers of rich, vivid color. Her peonies mimic the texture of feathers. You can even spot the occasional speck of pollen.
DeGiulio has demonstrated her sugar flowers in the test kitchens of both Martha Stewart and Macy's. Her wedding and other special occasion cakes have appeared on the STYLE network, TV Land, and in magazines and other media.
