When New York Magazine asked me to submit to their story on hand-painted cakes, I just JUMPED at the opportunity.  An idea has been stirring in my brain about recreating a famous painting on a cake.  We had already done something similar for Martha Stewart Weddings for their Fall 2010 issue based on a Dutch master's painting, but that cake predominantly featured our sugar flowers.  I really wanted to show off what could be done with buttercream.  YES, the icing on this cake is painted in BUTTERCREAM.  Isn't that cool?!?!

Before beginning, the cakes received our regular super smooth coat of vanilla buttercream.  Then, colors were mixed - four shades of green, three blues, a hint of light pink, plus a touch of hot pink and some almost black.  The painting process took an entire afternoon to create.  I tapped into my inner Monet and went to work creating the impression of the reflection of clouds in the water, lily pads and tiny waterlily flowers.  What do you think of the results??

Here is another shot of the cake at the New York Wedding showcase.  It was featured at the Top of the Garden booth.  Image is by the always festive Kristy May Photography.
